Are You Building Your Business in the Wrong Zone?
You’re good at what you do. In fact, you’re probably brilliant at it. You get bookings, your clients love you, and your work speaks for itself. So why does it still feel a bit… off?
There’s a reason so many wedding professionals find themselves feeling uninspired or burnt out - even when everything seems to be going well. And it might be because you’re operating from your Zone of Excellence, not your Zone of Genius.
Let’s dig into what that means - and why it matters more than you might think.
Understanding the Four Zones of Work
The Zone of Genius concept comes from Gay Hendricks’ book The Big Leap. He outlines four zones we all operate in throughout our working lives:
Zone of Incompetence: You’re not skilled in this area, and someone else would do it better.
Zone of Competence: You’re okay at this - but so are plenty of other people.
Zone of Excellence: You’re truly talented here. It’s likely how you make your money.
Zone of Genius: This is your unique gift - the work you’re meant to do. It energises you, challenges you, and sets you apart.
Most successful business owners spend the majority of their time in the Zone of Excellence.
It’s comfortable and rewarding. But staying there too long can leave you feeling stuck, especially if you crave deeper purpose and creative connection.
From Excellent to Exceptional
When I first came across this theory, it hit home. I’d spent over a decade producing results-driven content for wedding brands.
I was operating in my Zone of Excellence: skilled, experienced, and effective.
But I wasn’t lit up by it anymore.
I’ve since shifted into my Zone of Genius - helping wedding pros clarify their message, define their voice, and create intentional content that actually connects.
It’s work I love, and work that transforms not just what I do, but how I feel doing it.
Why Your Zone of Genius Matters
If you’re in your Zone of Genius, everything starts to align. Your brand becomes more distinctive. Your content gets more traction.
You begin attracting clients who actually value your strengths - not just your service list.
In short: you stop spinning your wheels and start building a business that feels good and performs well.
That doesn’t mean you need to ignore your Zone of Excellence altogether.
But getting clear on the difference between being good at something and being meant for something? That’s where the magic starts.
